The Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala has hit a big milestone, becoming the fastest Indian port to handle 2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of cargo in just 18 months since it opened . This nearly doubles its yearly capacity and shows how efficient it is in global shipping.
Operated by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. (APSEZ) for the Kerala government, Vizhinjam is the first Indian port to pull this off in such short time. Since it began operations, the port has welcomed over 950 vessels, including 67 Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs) that are almost 400 meters long. MSC Irina, the world’s largest container ship, and MSC Verona,a deep-draft vessel, have both docked here.
Just 10 nautical miles from a key east-west shipping route,Vizhinjam has clear advantages for shipping lines. Its natural deep draft of about 20 meters allows large ships to dock with minimal dredging, speeding up operations and cutting turnaround times. This location is crucial as global shipping routes deal with geopolitical tensions and supply-chain issues .
Shipping companies are looking for strong maritime infrastructure, and Vizhinjam's capabilities are catching their eye. The port can handle next-gen container vessels, putting it among a select few ports worldwide that can effectively manage large-scale transshipment traffic. Regular shipping routes to South Asia,Europe, Africa, and South America further cement its role in global trade.
The port is gearing up for a major expansion phase with about ₹16,000 crore in investment. This second phase includes a new 400-meter berth, part of total 1.2 km expansion, expected to wrap up by 2028. These upgrades will boost the port's container handling capacity and support full-scale export-import operations.
Trial runs for this expansion are set to kick off in July 2024,with port officially dedicated to the nation in May 2025. As Vizhinjam grows, it will play a big role in shaping India’s maritime trade in a changing global shipping landscape.
With its rapid growth and strategic advantages, Vizhinjam is becoming key transshipment hub in Indian Ocean Region (IOR),giving shipping lines a reliable option for efficient cargo transport . As the port continues to raise operational standards, its impact on regional and global trade is expected to increase.
