Southwest monsoon finally covers all of India as of Thursday,latest full coverage since 2021 . Arrived one day late in north Arabian Sea, Rajasthan,Haryana, and Punjab. Started slow, with Kerala getting its first drops three days late on June 4.
Heavy rains have ripped through the country, smashing infrastructure,flooding roads, and triggering deadly landslides in multiple states. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said monsoon picked up late June,leading to heavy downpours into early July .
In Kerala,things are grim. Landslide death toll in Wayanad hit six,with three more bodies found Thursday . Three people still missing at Anakkompoyil-Meppadi tunnel site.
Maharashtra's dealing with its own chaos. Rescue teams in Pimpri Chinchwad near Pune,where a building fell at a waste-to-energy plant after rain-soaked garbage pile collapsed. One body found,around eight people still trapped.
Uttarakhand is one of the worst-hit . Nonstop rains blocked 185+ roads,landslides disrupted Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage. In Tehri,a landslide on Chamba-Mussoorie highway took down an empty old building.
In Himachal Pradesh, flash floods in Kinnaur district swallowed a 100-foot iron bridge,cutting off several villages. IMD has a yellow alert out,predicting storms,lightning,and strong winds until July 15.
West Bengal's bracing too,IMD warns of possible landslides in Darjeeling, Kalimpong hills. Fishermen in coastal areas told to stay ashore till Friday due to heavy rain forecast from Bay of Bengal winds.
Northeast states aren't spared . Over 300 passengers stuck in Bualte village en route to Mizoram towns Siaha and Lawngtlai after landslides blocked National Highway 54. Tripura's rain displaced 2,500+ people from 434 families,now in relief camps in Dhalai,Khowai.
Floods hit six districts in Arunachal Pradesh. In Chhattisgarh, rains eased, shifting to light-to-moderate showers in south. Dantewada got 22.6 mm rain in 24 hours, Geedam and Dhanora saw 19.4 mm and 11.5 mm.
