Central government employees in India are on edge,waiting for 8th Pay Commission rollout. It could majorly affect their salaries,arrears. Experts say if delayed by 20 months,those at Levels 1 to 5 might see arrears from ₹3.6 lakh to ₹10.8 lakh,depending on fitment factor.
Timeline's still up in air. Implementation might start March 2027,but some analysts suspect it could drag on. The 8th Pay Commission got 18 months to finish its report after being announced in November 2025 . But if more time's needed, they can ask for an extension .
Fitment factor's key in salary changes. Acts as multiplier for pay adjustments, hugely impacting total arrears. National Council – Joint Consultative Machinery proposed 3.83, but experts say 2.57 is more realistic. Manjeet Singh Patel,President of All India NPS Employees Federation,suggested 2.1, which would bump basic pay of entry-level worker from ₹18,000 to ₹37,800 .
Level 1-5 staff are backbone of central government workforce . They do essential tasks in various departments. Jobs like multi-tasking staff,lower division clerks,senior technicians. Basic pay here starts at ₹18,000,maxing at ₹29,200.
Ramachandran Krishnamoorthy from BDO India crunched numbers. Arrears will vary with fitment factor. For example,with factor 2.0, Level 1 worker earning ₹18,000 would see pay jump to ₹36,000, totaling ₹3.6 lakh in arrears over 20 months. Level 5 could see ₹5.82 lakh.
