Concerns rising over data centre plans in Visakhapatnam. Environmentalist Bolisetty Satyanarayana demands more scrutiny . At a press conference Wednesday,he challenged claims from MP M. Sribharat,who said projects wouldn't harm environment .
Satyanarayana slammed these mega data centres being labeled Category B2,letting them skip mandatory public hearings and full Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). He insisted such big projects need thorough central-level review and public input before getting green light.
He sounded alarm on the projects' heavy water and power needs. Warned groundwater reliance and desalination could hurt marine life and local fishermen's livelihoods. Also said power grid might be strained by increased electricity use.
Satyanarayana flagged potential urban heat rise from lost green space and heat from data centres. Citing Northern Virginia's large data centres,he pushed for tighter zoning,renewable energy sources,and green buffer zones.
