As U.S. shifts from fossil fuels,big-box retailers like Walmart,Target, and Costco could play key role in renewable energy push. Their vast rooftops, parking lots are solar goldmines. Report by Environment America and Frontier Group suggests these giants could meet half their yearly electricity needs. Power for 8 million homes, cut emissions like 11.3 million gas cars.
IKEA in Baltimore cut purchased energy 84% after installing solar panels on roof, parking lot. Saw 57% cost drop from Sept to Dec 2020. By Feb 2021,IKEA had solar at 90% of U.S. locations, proving benefits.
But solar uptake by major retailers still limited . Few big-box stores have rooftop solar or canopies . Experts warn urgency rising as climate crisis worsens. Edwin Cowen of Cornell University stressed need for policy incentives, saying, “We are behind the eight ball,to put it mildly.”
Among them,Walmart has greatest solar potential. Roughly 5,000 stores, over 783 million square feet of rooftop space. Bigger than Manhattan. Could produce over 8,974 gigawatt hours annually. Johanna Neumann from Environment America said Walmart could make big impact if it commits to solar.
Walmart reports various renewable projects globally, many not rooftop solar . By 2021 fiscal year end, it had nearly 194 megawatts solar capacity in U.S. Target led on-site solar in 2019,with 542 locations, covering 15%-40% energy needs. Costco has 121 solar-equipped stores worldwide,95 in U.S .
Yet barriers persist . Retailers cite regulatory issues, labor costs, rooftop integrity. Craig D’Arcy from Home Depot said aging roofs major obstacle. Company runs 75 rooftop solar projects, more in works. Financial factors often drive decisions .
Despite hurdles, clean energy advocates say solar investment could boost local economies, tackle climate change. Big-box stores have potential to turn rooftops into energy assets. But,as Neumann noted, companies need mindset shift…
