Mukesh Ambani, the billionaire industrialist, celebrated a significant milestone as Jio Platforms emerged with a strong market debut. The telecom and digital services giant, backed by Meta and Google, saw its shares rise by 3.3% on Thursday, a day after listing at a premium of over 25% to its IPO price. This surge resulted in a market capitalization of 13.05 trillion rupees ($137.1 billion).
Ambani's flagship, Reliance Industries, which is the most valued company in India, holds a majority stake of over 64% in Jio Platforms post-IPO. The listing was an emotional moment for Ambani, who was visibly moved as his three children recounted the journey of building Jio and pledged to generate value for investors over the next five decades.
Analysts are optimistic about Jio's future cash flow, anticipating significant improvements as the proceeds from the IPO are directed towards repaying existing telecom debt. The slowdown in the company's 5G investment cycle is also expected to contribute to this positive outlook. However, experts caution that the current valuation, now comparable to global telecom giants, reflects much of the anticipated value.
Anurag Singh, founder and managing partner of Ansid Capital, noted that with only a 3% share dilution, Jio has managed to eliminate nearly 300 billion rupees of debt. He highlighted that Jio's market cap now places it alongside American telecom giants like AT&T and Verizon Communications, which have market caps of $139 billion and $179 billion, respectively.
In a statement ahead of the listing, Akash Ambani, the eldest son of Mukesh and managing director of Jio Platforms, outlined the company's ambitious plans for the next decade. He emphasized Jio's commitment to democratizing transformative technologies in India, including artificial intelligence, cloud services, connected devices, and even space connectivity.
Vaqarjaved Khan, a senior analyst at Angel One, remarked on Jio's substantial presence in Indian equities, citing its customer base exceeding half a billion, operating margins of 52%, and net leverage of 0.36 times. He pointed out that while the company's price-to-earnings ratio stands at 34 times, future returns will hinge on improvements in average revenue per user and AI services.
Following Jio's successful listing, the market value of the Reliance Group has soared to 30 trillion rupees, surpassing the Tata Group's 25 trillion rupees, according to a Bloomberg report. This achievement solidifies the Ambani family's position as leaders of the top conglomerate in India.
