In a historic achievement for Indian squash,Anahat Singh clinched the world junior title,becoming first player from her country to do so. The 18-year-old top seed triumphed over Egypt's Ruqayya Salem with a decisive score of 11-3,11-7, 11-9 in the final of the 2026 World Squash Junior Championships held in Niagara Falls,Ontario, on Saturday.
Singh,who is currently ranked 20th globally,demonstrated her prowess throughout the tournament, showcasing a level of skill and composure that belied her age. This victory marks a significant milestone in her career,especially after facing disappointments in previous editions of the championship. In her last attempt, she secured a bronze medal after reaching semi-finals, a stage she had struggled to surpass in earlier years.
Reflecting on her journey, Singh expressed a mix of disbelief and joy immediately following her victory . "I still feel like I’m dreaming," she stated during her on-court interview. "This tournament has been the worst for me, losing in semis and quarters in the last few years... This was my last year,so I knew that this was my only chance to win the tournament.
