Andrew Flintoff has left his post as head coach of England Lions, wrapping up his stint with national development team in under two years. The former all-rounder took the job in September 2024,but now shifts focus to Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League (BBL), a role he began in June.
In his departure,Flintoff expressed gratitude for chance to work with young cricketers. He said through the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB),"Unfortunately I've decided to step away from my role with the Lions. I've enjoyed working with the best young cricketers in the country and took pride in seeing them develop."
He thanked those who supported him, especially performance director Ed Barney and managing director Rob Key. Flintoff noted, "Thanks to the coaches and staff for their passion, tireless work and support every day."
Initially, Flintoff was balancing his duties with the Lions and Sydney Thunder . ECB even allowed him to miss two four-day matches in South Africa for BBL commitments. But now,he's fully stepping away from Lions role.
Barney praised Flintoff's impact on the development program, saying, "Fred transformed Lions environment into a programme that greatly impacted young players." He mentioned Flintoff's knack for fostering excellence and supporting coaches. Barney hopes for Flintoff's return to English cricket someday.
Flintoff's departure follows praise from Key, who acknowledged ECB's luck in having him contribute to the Lions. Flintoff was slated to coach a Professional County Club Select XI against Pakistan next Wednesday at Beckenham. With his exit, Mike Yardy, head coach for England Under-19 team,will lead the Lions for that match .
Flintoff's move marks another turn in his cricket journey,especially after a serious accident filming Top Gear. Now, his full attention is on making an impact with Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League.
