In a groundbreaking moment for cricket in Jammu and Kashmir,Auqib Nabi has become the first player from the region to join the Indian Test cricket team. The 29-year-old all-rounder was picked to replace Jasprit Bumrah for the series against Sri Lanka starting August 15.
Auqib's rise is remarkable given the difficulties athletes face in this conflict-prone area with scarce sporting infrastructure. Growing up in a small village in Baramulla district, he played on makeshift pitches with few resources. His father,Ghulam Nabi Dar, a schoolteacher,initially wanted him to focus on academics,dreaming of career in medicine for his son .
“There was no future in cricket . We thought playing was a waste of time,” Ghulam recalled. But Auqib's passion changed his mind. “After seeing his passion for cricket,I accepted it,” Ghulam said, realizing he needed to support his son's dreams .
Auqib faced many hurdles. He often traveled over 70 kilometers to Srinagar to practice, lacking even basic gear like spike shoes early on . His cousin,Bilal Ahmad Dar, admired Auqib's relentless drive,saying,“He knows how to fight obstacles and make a way for himself.”
In 2020,Auqib debuted in the Ranji Trophy,India's top domestic cricket tournament, making waves with a five-wicket haul against Jharkhand. His 2024-25 season, with 44 wickets, showed his talent, though national selectors overlooked him.
“When you do well but don't get recognition, it hurts,” Ghulam admitted,but he held onto hope . That hope paid off when Auqib took 60 wickets in just 10 matches the next season,leading Jammu and Kashmir to their first Ranji title in 67 years.
His achievements caught the eye of Indian Premier League scouts,landing him an 84 million rupees contract with the Delhi Capitals. Though his IPL chances were limited, his strong performances in red-ball cricket made him a serious national contender .
Parvez Rasool, Jammu and Kashmir's first international cricketer and Auqib's long-time captain,expressed pride in his protégé. “Playing Test cricket is the ultimate dream for any cricketer . Seeing Auqib earn that call-up fills me with immense pride,” Rasool said . Auqib's success is a shared dream for many in Jammu and Kashmir.
Rasool highlighted unique challenges for cricketers from region, where limited facilities and harsh winters have historically hindered development. “Making it to the Indian team is incredibly difficult for any player, but challenge is even greater when you come from Jammu and Kashmir,” he explained. Auqib's journey proves his exceptional consistency, mental strength,and determination .
Since 1957,when Jammu and Kashmir joined Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI),the region has struggled with inadequate cricket infrastructure. With just two major stadiums,both lacking facilities,the path to professional cricket has been tough. Rasool believes Auqib's selection will inspire future cricketers from the region,proving success is possible.
Back in Baramulla, Ghulam Nabi has become a local celebrity,often approached by people who recognize him as Auqib's father. “It makes me immensely proud,” he said, reflecting on impact his son's achievement has had on their community.
