Catastrophic flooding has devastated the Bhotekoshi River region in Nepal, claiming over 600 lives and leaving nearly 2,500 people missing. Many of those unaccounted for are international visitors, mostly from India. The disaster struck beyond the Rasuwa district on the morning of Wednesday, August 26, 2026, unleashing chaos and destruction.
Nepalese authorities swiftly responded by deploying more than 15,000 personnel from the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and the Armed Police Force. They launched intense search-and-rescue efforts. But they've been hampered by rough terrain and damaged infrastructure. The International Federation of Red Cross reports that around 93,000 residents have been impacted by this disaster.
This flood is one of Nepal's worst natural disasters since the 2015 earthquake. Scientists are investigating its cause, with preliminary findings pointing to a sturzstrom—a massive rock-and-ice slide—as the likely trigger. This type of avalanche involves a huge mass of rock collapsing and moving rapidly across long distances, picking up ice, snow, and debris along the way.
The avalanche originated in the Lhende Khola region near the Nepal-China border, seemingly occurring on the Nepalese side but severely affecting Nepal. Satellite images suggest that the massive slide was not caused by a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF), which experts have ruled out as the primary cause.
Dr. Ranjan Kumar Dahal from Tribhuvan University has drawn comparisons to the 2021 Chamoli disaster in India. In Chamoli, a similar rock-and-ice avalanche followed the collapse of bedrock under a glacier, causing a debris flow and subsequent flooding.
While the precise impact of climate change on this event is still unclear, experts agree that rising temperatures are accelerating glacier melting in the Himalayas. However, they caution against directly attributing this flood to global warming.
Questions have been raised about the effectiveness of early-warning systems, which were activated but had limited impact due to the rapid development of the flood. Kamal Kishore, head of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, highlighted the challenges of implementing these systems in fragile mountainous regions.
Rescue teams are tirelessly working to locate the missing and assess the potential for rebuilding the devastated communities along the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli corridor. Authorities warn that understanding the full scope of the destruction may take weeks or even months, and the death toll could rise further.
