On May 1,2026,the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fired back at Kapil Sibal,a senior advocate and Rajya Sabha member, who criticized the current political climate in India. In a video statement released on May 31,Sibal expressed concern that the ruling party was undermining democratic principles, linking his comments to a recent attack involving Abhishek Banerjee of the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla accused Sibal of lacking patriotism, questioning why he stayed silent about violent aftermath of the 2021 elections in West Bengal, where over 300 lives were lost among supporters of different parties. Poonawalla called out Sibal’s hypocrisy, saying,“While he claims to be ashamed to live in India, one must ask why he chose to stay silent during the violence that occurred in 2021.”
Poonawalla didn’t stop there. He took aim at Sibal's privileged status as a successful lawyer, suggesting his financial success clashes with his public criticisms of the country . “Disagreeing with the BJP is one matter, but expressing contempt for the nation crosses a significant boundary,” he stated.
He also drew comparisons between Sibal and another opposition figure, Rahul Gandhi, hinting that some in the opposition are quick to undermine India's democratic institutions. He recalled Gandhi's previous calls for foreign intervention and Sibal's shame as part of a troubling pattern among opposition leaders. “Just because there are issues with the BJP,it doesn't equate to disliking India,” Poonawalla asserted.
Regarding attack on Banerjee, Poonawalla condemned the heckling incident and noted that those arrested had ties to the TMC. “No matter the circumstances, nothing justifies such actions,” he said, suggesting that the lack of opposition condemnation of the violence might expose rifts within the TMC.
Another BJP spokesperson,Pradeep Bhandari, backed these claims, arguing that Sibal's comments disrespected millions of Indian voters, especially in West Bengal. He claimed such remarks undermine democratic process and ignore the sentiments of the electorate.
The exchange reflects rising tensions between the ruling BJP and opposition leaders as debates over political violence and the state of democracy in India continue. The BJP appears determined to counter any narratives seen as damaging to the country's image .
