Xie Feng, China's top diplomat to the United States, emphasized the critical juncture in US-China relations during a gala hosted by the China Institute of America in New York on Thursday. He remarked that the two nations are at a “historical crossroads,” reflecting on complexities of their bilateral ties following a recent summit between President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump.
During his address, Xie highlighted productive discussions that took place two weeks prior in Beijing,where the leaders envisioned a constructive relationship anchored in strategic stability . However, he acknowledged the ongoing tensions and uncertainties that both countries face,stating,“Tonight,our two countries face tensions, new questions,new uncertainty.”
The gala,held in a midtown ballroom,featured a mix of notable attendees,including Christopher Nixon Cox, grandson of former President Richard Nixon,and Chinese-American actress Joan Chen. Also present were television personality Yue-Sai Kan and fashion designer Vera Wang. event honored the Nixon,Bush, and Rockefeller families, alongside former Hong Kong leader Tung Chee-hwa,represented by his son,Andy Tung.
Nixon Cox, in his remarks, stressed the importance of ongoing dialogue, noting that “the work of bridge building has never been finished.” Despite recent meeting, significant issues remain unresolved,including trade imbalances,advancements in artificial intelligence, semiconductor competition,and rising tensions over Taiwan.
