Tensions are rising in the region as Beijing flexes its military muscles. Industry experts from the United States are pushing for a stronger commercial partnership with Taiwan. This effort aims to boost Taiwan's defense capabilities and speed up procurement processes tailored to its security needs . At the recent Taiwan-US Defence Industry Forum in Taipei, leaders from American defense sector, including retired General Charles Flynn, stressed the urgency of this initiative.
With a backlog of over US$20 billion in approved weapon deliveries from the United States, defense contractors noted that alternative sales methods could help Taiwan acquire military assets more efficiently. This flexibility is essential for the island as it works to bolster defenses against growing pressure from China, which continues to assert its claim over Taiwan.
Experts cautioned, though, that these new procurement strategies shouldn’t replace traditional arms sales, which are still key to Taiwan’s defense framework. Ongoing talks between US defense firms and Taiwanese officials show a shared commitment to strengthening Taiwan's deterrence posture as regional tensions rise.
