An exchange program between Chinese and American students caught some eyes, including a letter from Chinese President Xi Jinping. Liu Runjie, a fourth-year electronic engineering student at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK),took part in this effort to build friendship and understanding among young people from both nations. Liu was among 20 participants who shared their stories with Xi, who responded with encouragement for more cultural exchanges.
Liu reflected on the program, noting how an ocean voyage, a food delivery app, and curiosity helped break down stereotypes. He pointed out that real friendships formed during the two-week maritime trip played a key role in bridging cultural gaps. Liu felt excited and honored to receive Xi's letter, seeing it as a nod to their hard work and call for youth to become cultural ambassadors.
The program ran in March and April. Liu noticed many misunderstandings stem from a lack of direct interaction. He stressed that genuine communication is vital to overcoming biases. “What we truly saw and felt during the voyage, and the genuine friendship forged between us,could be seen, valued and recognized by country,” Liu said. His thoughts underscore how youth can help foster international understanding.
