Deepak Dhar, a leading figure in theoretical physics,has clinched the Dirac Medal for his major contributions to statistical physics . The International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy,gave the award,which celebrates physicists making significant impacts without yet earning top prizes like the Nobel. Dhar shares this with Bernard Derrida, Marc Mézard,and Haim Sompolinsky .
This medal,named after British physicist Paul A.M. Dirac,is handed out annually on his birthday. It honors those in theoretical physics who haven't won the Nobel,Fields Medal, or Wolf Prize. Past winners include big names like Edward Witten and Stephen Hawking . Quite few have gone on to win the Nobel.
Dhar's noted for the Abelian sandpile model,a framework showing how systems hit critical states where tiny changes can cause big outcomes. This idea of self-organized criticality first came up in the late 1980s by Per Bak,Chao Tang,and Kurt Wiesenfeld. They suggested it explains natural phenomena like earthquakes and forest fires.
In simple terms, the model acts like a sandpile where adding grain can either shift it a bit or cause an avalanche. Dhar's critical insight was that the pile's final shape stays the same no matter the order grains are added,allowing precise predictions. This has applications in fields from neuroscience to finance.
Dhar, born in 1951 in Pratapgarh,Uttar Pradesh,studied at Allahabad University,then got master's from the Indian Institute of Technology,Kanpur. He earned his PhD at Caltech in 1978, under the famed Richard Feynman.
After his doctorate, Dhar returned to India,spending much of his career at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai. In 2016,he moved to the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research in Pune,and since 2024, he's been INSA Distinguished Professor at the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences in Bengaluru.
Over nearly five decades,Dhar has made big strides in statistical mechanics, examining how many particles' collective behaviors create large-scale patterns . His awards include the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in 1991,the TWAS Prize in 2002,and the Padma Bhushan in 2023. In 2022, he won the Boltzmann Medal, a top honor in statistical physics, with John Hopfield, who later won the Nobel Prize in 2024 for neural networks.
