The 135th Durand Cup is a key platform for showcasing young football talent in India. Eleven players have been named 'Emerging Players, ' each receiving Rs 1 lakh. The aim is for these athletes to gain experience and show their skills on a national stage.
In an exciting match, 19-year-old Veer Arjun Joshi of Samaleswari Sporting scored a decisive free-kick to beat Mohammedan Sporting 3-2. Joshi, trained in Spain and England, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play.
The Durand Cup, with its 138-year history, is a learning ground for young players. This year, eleven athletes from various backgrounds have made their mark. Players come from different leagues and programs, each bringing their own experiences.
Acknowledging Emerging Talent
The Durand Football Tournament Society is spotlighting young athletes by awarding two Emerging Players from each of Groups A, B, C, E, and F, and one from Group D. Recipients include:
- Group A: Md. Altab Hussain (South United FC), Rinshid V (South United FC)
- Group B: Saikhom Borish Singh (Indian Army FT), Veer Arjun Joshi (Samaleswari Sporting)
- Group C: Samuel K. Vanlalpeka (Indian Air Force FT), Naorem Somananda Singh (Indian Air Force FT)
- Group D: Midul Doley (FC Raengdai)
- Group E: Kyrmenskhem Mukhim (Langsning FC), Dawancha Carlos Challam (Nongkseh SS & CC)
- Group F: Rituraj Mohan (Bodoland FC), Lalpekhlua Lalpekhlua (Karbi Anglong Morning Star FC)
For players like Naorem Somananda Singh and Samuel K. Vanlalpeka from the Indian Air Force Football Team, the tournament has been educational. Somananda's standout moment was scoring against Defenders FC, which he described as a career high point.
Vanlalpeka recalled his goal against SC Delhi, emphasizing the value of learning from experienced players.
Joshi's journey reflects varied paths to the Durand Cup. Despite training in different countries, he finds common ground with teammates across India.
At South United FC, players like Md. Altab Hussain and Rinshid V benefit from structured development programs. Altab, a 19-year-old striker from Manipur, is known in Bangalore's Super Division and has two India Under-20 call-ups. He acknowledged the tournament's challenges and expressed his ambitions to represent India at higher levels, like the Indian Super League.
