The Piedmont Triad Charitable Foundation is ushering in a new chapter for its annual golf tournament at Sedgefield Country Club, formerly the Wyndham Championship. From 2027, the event will be known as GO by Raymond James, a nod to its origins as the Greater Greensboro Open.
Locals will be glad to hear that the tournament stays put at Sedgefield, its home since 1938. This rebranding is a big step up, as GO by Raymond James will become part of the PGA Tour Championship Series in 2028, boosting its stature in professional golf.
Mark Brazil, CEO of the Piedmont Triad Charitable Foundation, is thrilled with the new sponsorship, highlighting the foundation's goal of hosting a major event in North Carolina. “We wanted to be one of the big deals in the state, ” he said, after a year-long search for a sponsor. Brazil is hopeful the tournament will now draw top players who have skipped other events.
The Greensboro tournament has a rich history, with past champions like Sam Snead and Ben Hogan. GO by Raymond James will remain the regular-season finale, set for August 2-8, 2027, with comprehensive broadcast coverage on CBS, Golf Channel, and more.
Dhruv Prasad, PGA Tour's Chief Commercial Officer, noted, “The PGA Tour’s Greensboro event has one of the richest histories in men’s professional golf.” He’s excited about partnering with Raymond James to boost the tournament's legacy and community contributions.
The PGA Tour Championship Series will feature about 23-24 events, including majors and international team competitions. The series' purse will rise to $20-30 million, up from this year's $8.5 million, matching a $40 million funding promise from North Carolina, contingent on securing a top-tier event.
As the tournament gears up for its new era, Brazil mentioned upcoming renovations at Sedgefield to improve the experience for players and fans. “There will be some work done on the course over the next couple of years, ” he said.
Since its start, the tournament has supported local initiatives, with the Piedmont Triad Charitable Foundation aiding youth education and community development. The foundation has provided over 1 million meals to families in need through its backpack program. Under Raymond James's leadership, plans are in place to expand its Ready for School efforts with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
Raymond James Financial, Inc., a financial services company listed on the NYSE as RJF, will use its resources to enhance the tournament's charitable reach. The firm offers asset management and capital markets services and aims to bolster the local community through its initiatives.
As Greensboro gears up for this exciting change, the tournament's legacy continues to grow, attracting top talent and supporting local causes for years to come.
