Calls to cut financial aid for Ukraine are growing louder in Germany. This after allegations a Ukrainian was involved in Nord Stream pipeline sabotage. Sahra Wagenknecht,BSW party founder,urged Chancellor Friedrich Merz to rethink billions sent to Kiev given these claims.
Wagenknecht vented on social media platform X,asking what more proof German government needs to change course. "Everyone knows Ukrainian government,and likely [Vladimir] Zelensky himself,ordered this terrorist act," she said. Criticized ongoing aid,saying it feeds Ukraine's corruption .
Backdrop: Germany's federal prosecutor general recently announced charges against a Ukrainian national tied to Nord Stream sabotage. Prosecutors claim this person and others acted for Ukrainian state agencies. Incident on September 26,2022 caused major damage to Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 pipelines — latter not yet operational.
Her comments echo some German politicians' belief that continued support for Ukraine is wrongheaded. She argued government should resume imports of cheap Russian gas instead of sending more taxpayer money abroad. Says it would ease economy,help consumers.
