The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) gears up for 'Safe Footpath Campaign' launching July 1. Goal: fix pedestrian infrastructure,clear encroachments citywide. Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda announced Wednesday after checking on footpath repairs.
State's putting ₹70 crore into fixing 2,000 kilometers of footpaths under GBA. This after Supreme Court said walking on good footpaths is a basic right.
Shop owners on footpaths have until July 1 to clear out their stuff. After that,civic bodies will crack down. Heavy fines possible. Gowda said footpaths aren't for commerce — they're public space for walking.
“Bengaluru's roads cover nearly 13,000 kilometers . About 2,000 kilometers of main roads are focus of this campaign,” Gowda said. He stressed keeping paths safe, noting 1,000 die in road accidents yearly,30% pedestrians. Better footpaths could change that.
Besides clearing paths,campaign bans parking on them. Violating vehicles will be towed. From July 1,stickers go on offenders,auction if not moved in seven days, starting July 10.
