AI in Newborn Health Monitoring
Health Department of India plans to roll out AI-driven app to assess newborn health metrics. Satya Kumar Yadav, Minister for Health,Medical Education, and Family Welfare, announced the initiative. It's called ‘Shishu Maapan’,developed with Wadhwani AI.
Right now,ASHA workers visit newborns' homes on specific days — 3rd,7th, 14th,21st, 28th,and 42nd days after birth. They record vital health parameters like weight, length manually. This process can be slow and often inaccurate. Lugging weighing scales and other gear house to house adds to their burden, especially with delicate newborns.
App aims to cut down this hassle. Just place smartphone near infant, app captures necessary measurements. No direct contact needed. Simplifies ASHA workers' job, reduces reliance on multiple devices.
Before statewide launch,Health Department will build database using videos of 1,000 newborns. This data will integrate AI system with current app used by ASHA workers. Expected timeline: about three months.
Training sessions for ASHA workers and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) have already started. Pilot project running in Mangalagiri constituency, collecting health data from 1,000 newborns . Pilot results will shape wider rollout strategy across state. Will this tech meet needs of healthcare providers and families? Time will tell…
