Key Takeaways

  • The Multi-Spectral Imaging Carbon Observatory, or Musico, will monitor greenhouse gases from an orbit of 400 kilometers above Earth.
  • Lai Ka-ying, Hong Kong's first home-grown astronaut, played a key role in installing Musico on the Tiangong space station.
  • Musico is designed to analyze solar spectrum variations to pinpoint greenhouse gas emission sources.
  • The instrument will operate in space for a minimum of two years, enhancing environmental monitoring capabilities.
  • This launch represents a significant milestone for Hong Kong's advancements in space exploration and technology development.

China's Tiangong space station now hosts Musico,a new Multi-Spectral Imaging Carbon Observatory. Developed by Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST),it was installed by Lai Ka-ying,the city’s pioneering astronaut.

Now in orbit for at least two years,Musico operates about 400 kilometers above Earth. It analyzes solar spectrum variations to pinpoint greenhouse gas sources. HKUST said Sunday the device wrapped up final space prep.

Dr . Lai,known as Hong Kong’s first payload specialist, was key in assembling and testing Musico with two other astronauts . The university confirmed Musico is securely attached to Tiangong's exterior and fully operational.

For Hong Kong, this marks a bold move in space exploration and environmental monitoring. But how far will it take them…
