Alex Lee Chun-ting, general manager of Miramar Travel,noted that initial fears surrounding the conflict had dampened interest in long-haul European tours during the summer months . However,he now anticipates 3% increase in bookings compared to the previous year . Lee explained that the combination of heightened safety concerns and rising airfare has made many travelers reconsider their options.
“Some mainland airlines have recognized this shift in consumer behavior,” Lee stated . “They have begun offering group discounts for tours departing from Hong Kong,with stopovers in cities like Shanghai or Beijing before continuing to Europe.” This strategy has effectively diverted some demand away from Middle Eastern carriers.
Travelers are increasingly open to using services from mainland airlines, thanks in part to improvements in both airline offerings and airport facilities. For instance, flights to London, a favored destination among Hongkongers,are now averaging HK$1,000 to HK$2,000 (approximately US$127 to US$255) cheaper when transiting through mainland China compared to direct flights from Hong Kong. This price difference does not include additional fuel surcharges and taxes, which can further impact overall travel costs.
Carmen Chan Hiu-nam,chief operating officer of Goldjoy Holidays, reported that around 50% of their customers planning trips to Europe have opted for routes that involve transit through the mainland. This reflects a broader trend where travelers are willing to adapt their plans in response to geopolitical events.
