Nashik authorities have confirmed that risk of an onion scarcity in India is minimal, thanks to sufficient inventories across major cultivation regions. A recent evaluation conducted by association responsible for promoting horticultural exports indicated that stock levels are robust, particularly in select areas of the country.
Although there has been an increase in lower-grade onion availability in markets, premium quality onions are still being stored . These higher-grade onions are expected to be released as market conditions fluctuate or arrivals decline. The association reported a minor reduction in overall market supply recently, yet this has not caused significant concern about stock availability.
Conversely, the export landscape is facing challenges. Shipments of Indian onions have drastically dropped to about 25–30 percent of last year's export volume. This downturn is primarily attributed to competitive pricing from onions sourced from Pakistan and China. Consequently, this situation is likely to impact both demand and pricing dynamics for Indian onions in markets across Gulf,Sri Lanka, and parts of East Asia in the upcoming months.
In the southern regions, approximately 60 percent of the onion crop has been successfully planted in Karnataka's Chitradurga and Challakere districts . While planting has decreased compared to the previous year, the association maintains a positive outlook. Provided rainfall is adequate during crucial growth and harvesting periods, the quality of onions is expected to improve. Fresh produce from Karnataka is projected to begin arriving after August 15,with further supplies anticipated from Dharwad, Hubballi, Belagavi,Bagalkot, and Solapur later in September and October.
The horticultural association aims to reassess the situation concerning the crop during the first or second week of August. Overall findings suggest a steady onion supply, easing immediate fears of potential shortages. Vikas Singh from association stated,"Our evaluation accurately depicts the current market conditions. With onion stocks at satisfactory level, there is no cause for alarm regarding shortages. We have communicated these insights to Consumer Protection Department and urge the Central Government to enhance efforts to promote onion exports."
