Ilaiyaraaja, titan of Indian music, still shapes cinema and concert soundscapes after five decades. The 83-year-old Tamil Nadu composer scored music for over 1,000 films in nine languages—a record unmatched in Indian cinema.
His career took off with 1976 film Annakili,a turning point for Tamil film music. Before Ilaiyaraaja,the genre stuck to Indian classical traditions,rarely mixing in Western elements.
