Heavy rainfall is set to continue in Mumbai as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for the city on July 9. Meanwhile, several neighboring districts are under a Red Alert due to the potential for extremely heavy rainfall.
The IMD predicts light to moderate rain throughout the day, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds . Despite indications that the most intense downpours may be subsiding, officials are urging residents to remain vigilant. Continuous rainfall over recent days has left many low-lying areas vulnerable to flooding, and even brief periods of heavy rain could lead to significant water accumulation.
Authorities have advised citizens, particularly those in flood-prone neighborhoods,to stay updated on weather forecasts and to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain. The districts facing highest level of warning include Palghar, Raigad, Nashik,Pune, and Satara. In addition, Mumbai Suburban and Thane are currently under an Orange Alert, with forecasts indicating very heavy rainfall at isolated locations .
Local officials in these regions are being urged to prepare for possible flooding,disruptions to transportation,and other rain-related hazards. The IMD has also extended Yellow Alerts to Dhule,Nandurbar,Jalgaon, Kolhapur,Chandrapur,and Gadchiroli,where isolated heavy rainfall is still anticipated.
Looking ahead,the IMD has noted that rainfall activity across parts of Maharashtra is likely to gradually weaken starting July 9. The agency has indicated that no new monsoon systems are expected to develop over the Bay of Bengal in the near future,which suggests that the exceptionally heavy rainfall affecting Mumbai and surrounding areas may begin to ease. However,intermittent showers and thunderstorms are still forecasted for the coming days, indicating that monsoon conditions will persist across much of the state.
