Mumbai, July 25 — Indian cricket team is setting its sights on the long-term development of 15-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi, not only as a top-order batsman but also as a potential bowling asset. Following his remarkable debut performance in first T20I against Zimbabwe,where he scored a blistering 50 runs off just 18 balls,Suryavanshi has captured the attention of selectors and fans alike. He became the youngest player to achieve a half-century in international cricket across all formats.
Bowling coach Sunil Joshi emphasized the importance of balancing Suryavanshi's batting prowess with bowling skills as part of a comprehensive development strategy . "The immediate focus is on his batting, which has been outstanding. This is a great opportunity for him to shine," Joshi remarked during a press conference. He acknowledged Suryavanshi's impressive form, which he carried over from the Under-19 World Cup final, into the T20I arena .
Joshi elaborated on the team's approach,stating that while batting remains the priority, there will be opportunities to nurture Suryavanshi's bowling . "Whenever we have time, I will work with him at the Centre of Excellence. Once we see consistent progress in his bowling,we will certainly focus on it more," he explained.
The bowling coach also addressed the broader strategy regarding other young players, including Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma, who are being considered as part-time bowling options. Joshi noted that both players have shown capability to contribute with ball. He highlighted Sharma's significant improvements in his bowling skills and Varma's potential to add depth to bowling lineup . "We keep discussing with Tilak the importance of building pressure by conceding fewer runs and bowling more dot balls," he added .
In addition to Suryavanshi,Joshi expressed optimism about all-rounder Suryansh Shedge,describing him as a promising talent who deserves time to establish himself within Indian team. He pointed out that players like Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube have secured their places through consistent performances, and Shedge should be afforded similar opportunities to grow.
