In a tragic incident at the Toledo Bend Reservoir on the Texas-Louisiana border,Anurup Reddy Koduru,a 22-year-old Indian student, drowned while attempting to rescue three friends on May 29 . Just weeks after graduating from University of North Texas, Koduru,an accomplished swimmer, managed to save his friends but became ensnared in a fishing line,which led to his tragic demise in the strong currents.
Authorities reported that Koduru was swimming with friends near spillway when he went under water. Despite the immediate efforts of rescue teams, his body was discovered later at a depth of nearly 20 feet. search involved multiple agencies,including South Sabine Fire District, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, and the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office Dive Team.
Initially, officials withheld Koduru's identity, but it was later confirmed by family members. His brother, Ashtrith Reddy Koduru, has since launched a fundraising campaign to cover costs of repatriating Anurup’s body to India and arranging for his last rites. The family expressed their devastation,stating they were "shattered" by the loss and faced significant expenses related to international transport, legal paperwork,and funeral arrangements.
The community has rallied around the family,moved by Anurup’s selfless act of bravery. Tributes have poured in, highlighting not only his academic accomplishments but also his courage in risking his life to save others. The Indian Consulate in Houston has extended its condolences and is actively assisting the family during this difficult time, ensuring they are kept informed of developments.
