Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan has emphasized the significance of loyalty to a single franchise in establishing a lasting legacy in cricket. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Pathan reflected on his own experiences across multiple teams in Indian Premier League (IPL), advocating for players to prioritize long-term commitments to one franchise when possible.
Pathan began his IPL career with the Punjab Kings, where he played for three seasons. He recalled,“If you want to create a legacy as a player, you can do that only by staying with one franchise if you get that opportunity.” However, he noted that such opportunities are rare, as he faced retention challenges during his time with Punjab. “In the fourth year, Punjab wanted me to stay,but due to the retention rules and other such reasons,they couldn’t retain any players. Nobody was retained,” he explained.
The former pace-bowling all-rounder drew attention to the broader implications of franchise loyalty,highlighting how teams strive to keep their best players despite external pressures. He pointed to the Kolkata Knight Riders as an example,noting their efforts to nurture young talent like Shubman Gill. “A player like Shubman Gill,they would have wanted to keep him. They groomed him and picked him first. But sometimes circumstances are such that you simply can’t retain players,” Pathan remarked .
Pathan's insights underscore the importance of stability in a player's career. He urged current and aspiring cricketers to consider the long-term benefits of remaining with one franchise, rather than frequently switching teams. “If you get the chance to stay with one franchise, let go of few things, build your legacy, and stay with that team,” he advised.
Throughout his IPL journey, Pathan played for six different franchises, including Delhi Daredevils (now known as the Capitals), Sunrisers Hyderabad, Chennai Super Kings,Rising Pune Supergiant, and Gujarat Lions. His diverse experiences across these teams have shaped his perspective on the value of loyalty and continuity in professional cricket .
