New vision centres in rural Alwar, Rajasthan,are boosting eye care access Run by Sightsavers India, this effort weaves crucial eye health services into local health systems,making a big difference for villagers.
Set up in Community Health Centres (CHCs) in Ramgarh and Laxmangarh,these centres have trained optometrists doing door-to-door checks,catching cataracts and refractive errors early . Already,they’re making timely diagnoses possible in remote spots.
Each centre has key diagnostic gear: retinoscope,slit lamp with non-contact tonometer, LED vision chart. They offer eye exams,refraction services, free glasses, making sure villagers get needed eye care.
Community outreach is key, with six mobilisers—three per block—screening and sending folks to centres for more checks. Around 54,000 screenings done so far,finding eye issues early .
Cataract patients get full eye checks,blood pressure, and glucose tests before heading to Alwar district hospital for surgery. Local eye camps, in partnership with Panchayati Raj,bring care to villages. Nine camps reached about 400 villages in two blocks.
For many, Jeevan Jyoti is life-changing. Kishan Devi,64, from Ramgarh, regained sight in her left eye after surgery. "Everything was dark before,and I even fell, injuring my knees. Now I see clearly and manage household work easily," she shared.
Lakshman Singh, 68, from Laxmangarh,said cataracts affected his farming. "A screening camp diagnosed me and sent me to Alwar for surgery. Now I see well and read without help," he noted.
The project doubled footfall at CHCs for eye care, showing growing trust in centres. Timely care boosts life quality, livelihoods, education,dignity. It's expected to cut avoidable blindness in areas where healthcare access is tough .
Besides adult care,Jeevan Jyoti also tackles kids' vision It spots and fixes student vision issues early in government schools. Inclusive education supports blind or low-vision kids with Braille,low vision tools,and learning materials.
