Heavy rainfall continues to impact Kerala,despite reduction in intensity over the last few days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised the rain alert from yellow to orange,indicating the potential for intense downpours across state. This warning affects all districts except Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Thrissur, and Palakkad.
Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan is scheduled to lead an online emergency meeting to evaluate the ongoing situation as the state grapples with the aftermath of recent torrential rains. Flash flood warnings have been issued, particularly for Pathanamthitta, which has experienced significant rainfall.
In response to the adverse weather conditions,a holiday has been declared for educational institutions in 12 districts, including Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, and Kozhikode. The decision aims to ensure the safety of students amid the escalating flood risks .
The situation remains critical,with the death toll from the floods reaching 11. Over 7,600 individuals have been evacuated to relief camps as rescue operations continue. In Kozhikode, approximately 200 families in the Parambil Bazar area have been relocated due to rising floodwaters .
As rivers swell from the persistent rains, Poonoor River has reached alarming levels,prompting authorities to take precautionary measures. Kakkayam reservoir is nearing capacity, leading to the release of water through spillway gates. This has heightened concerns about flooding in region.
The IMD forecasts that districts under orange alert could receive between 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm of rainfall in the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, isolated heavy rain is expected to persist in the remaining districts,raising stakes for local communities already facing the brunt of the weather.
