The redevelopment of Vyttila Junction in Kochi, Kerala, is nearing completion, with significant progress made under the ₹1.5 crore initiative by the Kerala Road Safety Authority (KRSA). The project, which involves widening and redeveloping the areas beneath the Vyttila flyover, is opening to traffic in stages.
Key elements of the redevelopment include the dismantling of substantial portions of medians and a roundabout previously constructed by the Public Works Department's National Highway wing. 80% of the work is finished, though the paving of blocks on the south-eastern side of Kaniampuzha Road, which leads to the Vyttila Mobility Hub, is still underway. This delay is attributed to recent rainfall.
Keltron, the electronics corporation, is tasked with relocating traffic signal posts to the far ends of the newly developed carriageways. Additionally, more medians at the junction need to be dismantled. Once these tasks are completed, traffic will be formally diverted through the revamped carriageway sections.
A dedicated bus bay, capable of accommodating four buses simultaneously, is planned for the south-western side of the junction. This will be established after the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) completes its drainage work. Barricades will be installed to define the bus bay, preventing buses from parking in unauthorized areas and ensuring passengers from the Aroor side can alight safely.
The Kochi Corporation has been urged to clear encroachments from the bellmouth of S. A. Road. This will allow vehicles from the Aroor side to make a free-left turn towards the road, enhancing traffic flow. Uma Thomas, Thrikkakara MLA, noted that delays in relocating utility cables and traffic signal posts have hindered the project's completion. She emphasized the goal of achieving a signal-free junction to further streamline traffic, potentially with assistance from the National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (NATPAC).
Social activist Shamier Abdulla highlighted the importance of a signal-free junction, given Vyttila's status as the largest and busiest junction in Kerala. He pointed out that this would facilitate smoother entry and exit for vehicles at the Vyttila Mobility Hub. Abdulla also advocated for inter-State buses to be parked at the hub rather than on the western side of the junction.
