Kerala's Transport Minister C.P. John has issued a stern warning to the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) regarding misuse of the Priyadarshini free travel scheme, which is designed exclusively for women . He stated that any employees found issuing free tickets to men would face strict disciplinary action. This announcement came during press briefing at Payambalam Guest House in Kannur on Sunday,July 26,2026.
The Minister emphasized that the scheme is not an initiative of the KSRTC but a government program aimed at empowering women . Instances of violations have already been reported, particularly in Thiruvananthapuram,and he made it clear that such practices would not be tolerated. “Strict action will be taken against employees who issue free tickets to men,” he asserted.
In addition to addressing misuse of the ticketing system, John announced plans to hire private buses during festival seasons to accommodate the surge in travel demand. He noted that the KSRTC has not purchased new buses in over decade,resulting in an aging fleet that struggles to meet current needs. Minister called on private bus operators to assist by providing their vehicles during peak travel times.
On another front,John discussed improvements to services at the Regional Transport Office (RTO). He revealed that discussions with officials have led to extension of public access hours . Currently, many RTO offices do not serve visitors after 1 p.m. Under the new arrangement,the public will be able to meet with officials from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.,in addition to regular hours. This change is expected to benefit those traveling long distances to access RTO services.
As Kerala prepares for upcoming festivals, combination of stricter enforcement of Priyadarshini scheme and enhanced transport services reflects government's commitment to both women’s empowerment and improved public transportation .
