Kochi Bypass project just got big boost. Indian government's nod for new 50-km greenfield corridor changes game. This eight-lane route will link Aroor on NH 66 with Angamaly on NH 544,letting drivers skirt the jam-packed Aroor-Edapally stretch, known for accidents, delays.

Originally floated a decade back, Kochi Bypass was meant to be 44-km,six-lane road connecting Nettoor on NH 66 Bypass to Karayamparambu, north of Angamaly. But it stalled. Especially after its 3A notification lapsed in 2024. MP Benny Behanan pointed to sluggish land acquisition under previous LDF government as a major drag.

Behanan says new 3A notification for eight-lane project coming soon. Centre approved land acquisition at 70 meters wide,up from 45 meters. This will allow eight lanes, with potential to widen to ten later .

New traffic survey was needed — old data from five years back was outdated, based on six-lane idea. Updated survey showed big jump in traffic on inter-State,inter-district,intra-district routes. That's why the eight-lane plan .

NHAI has signed off on eight-lane plan, but more details yet to come. Extending bypass from Nettoor to Aroor raises questions about earlier considered trumpet-shaped flyover at Nettoor, which was to handle traffic from NH Bypass,Kochi Bypass,Kochi Port Connectivity NH.

Approval of this project is key step toward easing congestion here. But will it deliver on promise to save time, fuel for commuters?
