Concerns mount over safety of partially collapsed water tank in Thammanam, especially with monsoon season nearing. Kerala Water Authority (KWA) hasn't started any reinforcement work on damaged structure, posing risks to surrounding area .
The tank, with capacity of 1.35 crore litres, suffered major failure when Chamber 1 collapsed November 10 last year. Water supply disrupted across several Kochi regions. Seven months on, no substantial action to fix damage or replace tank .
KWA proposals included building new 35-lakh-litre tank at Thammanam site or redesigning Chamber 1 for continued use after modifications. Though second chamber still operational, expert committee advised against restoring collapsed section, urging new tank construction . Project still waiting on administrative approval.
Experts warn neglect could worsen situation, possibly affecting Chamber 2,which is functional. “Leaving collapsed tank as is is dangerous . Needs close supervision, careful intervention,” said KWA representative. Emphasized removing damaged sections, stabilizing soil to ensure structure's integrity .
And area has another aging tank needing strengthening to prevent future issues. “Focus on climate resilience,” KWA representative added, noting threats from salty winds, soil salinity due to sea proximity. Environmental factors erode such structures, increasing risk of catastrophic failures.
With monsoon approaching, urgency for action grows . Without immediate intervention, city may face serious water supply and safety challenges. KWA's inaction raises questions about future stability of Kochi's water infrastructure…
