The coastal area of Vellayil in Kozhikode is poised for significant transformation, thanks to two state government initiatives totaling ₹5 crore. Chief Minister V.D . Satheesan unveiled the funding during his recent Budget presentation for 2026–27, allocating ₹3 crore for the Avikkal Thodu development project and ₹2 crore for the renovation of the Vellayil Fishing Harbour.

Avikkal Thodu, an urban canal that channels stormwater, has suffered from severe pollution due to untreated sewage and solid waste from nearby regions. This deterioration has sparked concerns over public health and environmental safety among local residents. Kozhikode North MLA K . Jayanth assured that the projects would commence promptly, stating,“The canal will be properly covered with slabs to improve its unhygienic condition. The vacant space next to it will be developed into a recreation area.”

The Vellayil Fishing Harbour,a vital hub for thousands of fisherfolk,is also set for much-needed upgrade. Jayanth noted that the current facilities are outdated and inadequate. “The renovated harbour will have all essential amenities, including restrooms,” he explained. He also mentioned that if the allocated funds fall short, additional resources could be drawn from the MLA fund.

Local fisherman K. Jaffer expressed optimism about renovation, saying,“The current condition of the harbour is very poor. Since the funds have been allocated, it would be good if harbour is renovated.” Soufiya N.P., the Vellayil division councillor, outlined plans for the harbour's expansion, including extending breakwater and jetty, and constructing a dedicated storage building. She emphasized that basic facilities such as drinking water would be prioritized.

A.P. Abdullakutty, president of the Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry, welcomed the funding but urged for strategic utilization. “The harbour should be equipped with basic infrastructure, proper sanitation, and better marketing and sales facilities,” he stated. Abdullakutty also proposed the idea of a children's museum focused on fishing, which could boost local tourism .

In addition to these projects, the Kozhikode Corporation is nearing completion on the renovation of Lions Park. Together, these initiatives are expected to significantly enhance beach area, providing substantial benefits to local community, according to Jayanth.
