Lebanese President Joseph Aoun urged U.S. to push Israel for quick troop withdrawal from Lebanon. He said Israeli occupation weakens Lebanon's state legitimacy,blocking deployment of Lebanese forces at southern border. Withdrawal crucial for regional peace,he stressed.
In a press statement,Aoun warned, “If Israel continues to stubbornly press for maintaining its [military] presence,it will be antithetical to the goals pursued by the United States and Lebanon.” He highlighted need to restore Lebanon's sovereignty,strengthen government institutions.
June 26,U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a framework agreement with Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors in Washington after five negotiation rounds. This deal aims to let Lebanese forces gradually regain full control over Lebanese soil. And includes disarming non-state groups,dismantling military infrastructure,paving way for Israeli troop withdrawal from south Lebanon.
