Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off three-nation tour on Monday,landing in Indonesia to strengthen India's strategic ties in region. First bilateral visit since both countries bumped their relationship to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership back in 2018.
Touching down in Jakarta,Modi was greeted by President Prabowo Subianto with a ceremonial reception,a Guard of Honour. Modi thanked him,saying on social media,“I’m touched by President Prabowo Subianto’s gesture of welcoming me at airport.”
While there,Modi has discussions planned with Subianto to boost cooperation across sectors. He stressed importance of this partnership,noting, “In 2018,we elevated our relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,which has benefitted our people.”
As part of cultural exchange,Modi and Subianto will visit historic Prambanan Temple complex in Yogyakarta,Indonesia’s largest Hindu temple,about 17 kilometers from Yogyakarta city. Modi also eager to meet the Indian community during visit.
This trip is part of broader push to reinforce India's Act East Policy and MAHASAGAR Vision, aiming for shared security and growth. Modi said his stops in Indonesia, Australia,and New Zealand will help ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific .
Modi's schedule includes Melbourne,where he will meet with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese,then visit to Auckland at New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s invitation. His Indonesia visit comes after President Prabowo attended India's Republic Day as chief guest January 2025.
“India and Indonesia share strong civilizational and people-to-people ties,and my visit will deepen all aspects of our partnership,” Modi stated,noting importance of this diplomatic effort. But will it deliver tangible results…
