June 1,2026. Pride flag's vibrant colors soared at Sahodaran in Chennai, kicking off Pride Month. Over 50 LGBTQIA+ members gathered,chanting for non-discrimination and inclusion .
This year's Chennai Rainbow Pride,18th edition,ends with a self-respect march June 28. But in middle of festivities,participants voiced discontent with new Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Act,2026. They want more protections: horizontal reservation in education,gender-neutral washrooms,changing transgender welfare board's name to Thirunar Nala Variyam.
Jaya,General Manager of Sahodaran,stressed need to engage with new Tamil Nadu government. “We hope TNRC members will meet the government so we can explain challenges directly,” she said,recalling past interactions with officials.
Fred Rogers,trans man,spoke on struggles faced,especially erasure of trans men in wider LGBTQIA+ narrative. “We are just like any other human being, but why should we be discriminated against based on our identity?” he asked . For Rogers,Pride 2026 is about authenticity,joy—something he wishes for peers too.
Employment discrimination still critical issue. Jaahanavi,doctor with MBBS from Russia,shared how job offers in Chennai vanished when she disclosed she's a trans woman. Incidents like these show ongoing job market challenges for transgender people .
Archanaa Seker,activist and TNRC member,highlighted Pride Month's role for equality and visibility . “There is divisive world out there waiting to break spaces and movements like these. So,it is important we find hope where it is and commit to reparation whenever things go wrong,” she said . Urgency of solidarity and action remains clear…
