In a revealing interview, actor Manoj Bajpayee shared how he pushed for Shefali Shah to play Pyaari Mhatre in the classic 1998 film Satya. Despite director Ram Gopal Varma's initial doubts,Bajpayee's persistence got Shah into the film, now a cornerstone of Indian cinema.
Bajpayee, who's back in the spotlight with The Family Man,first met Varma during auditions for 1997 comedy Daud. Though he tried out for a different role,Varma saw his potential and gave him a bigger part. This opened the door for Bajpayee's iconic role as gangster Bhiku Mhatre in Satya.
But when it came to casting Bhiku's wife,Varma wasn't sold on Bajpayee's pick,Shefali Shah . Varma had worked with Shah in Rangeela, where she had a minor role. Bajpayee recalled,“I can take this. I mentioned Shefali’s name to Ramu. He was not too convinced with her.” But Bajpayee wouldn't back down.
He remembered meeting Shah through her then-husband,actor Harsh Chhaya,in their early TV days. “I know her for many years. We actually partied together when we were too young. That’s just nostalgia,” he said, reflecting on their past.
As casting dragged on,Bajpayee stood firm . “I wanted someone really good as my wife in Satya, and I could only think of Shefali.” His determination eventually swayed Varma, who finally said,“Okay, call her.” That decision changed everything, giving Shah chance to add her unique touch to the role .
Shah's performance not only elevated her character but also the chemistry between the leads. Bajpayee praised her, saying,“I can tell you, with complete confidence,it’s Shefali who’s given these small touches to not only her character, but also make this couple’s chemistry look amazing.”
In recent years,Bajpayee has worked on projects tied to Shah's husband,Vipul Shah. He's eager to team up with her again in future films, calling it “amazing.” Their professional relationship keeps growing, rooted in respect and shared history.
As Bajpayee looks back on his journey from Satya to now,he acknowledges film's massive impact on his career. It cemented his status as a leading actor and showed the power of collaboration and conviction in the creative process. Shefali Shah's casting is a testament to persistence and belief in one's vision.
