Playback singer Mano is launching a unique platform to let music enthusiasts showcase talent. "Sing with Mano" kicks off in Chennai this October, inviting participants to perform their favorite songs alongside the artist .
In the U.S. recently, Mano had a touching moment with a couple who said his song "Nee Oru Kadhal Sangeetham" from Nayakan played big role in their love story. It reinforced his belief in music's power to create lasting memories .
"It's not a competition," Mano stressed in an interview . He wants to give regular music lovers a stage they might not otherwise have. Participants get help with song choice, vocal fit, and rehearsal, so they're ready when it counts.
Mano, looking back on his musical path, shared memories of his early life surrounded by music. Born Nagoor Babu, he became "Mano" on advice from music legend Ilaiyaraaja to avoid mix-ups with another singer. His musical family—father, grandfather, both musicians—shaped his upbringing .
He recalled performing in mythological dramas, learning songs young, and his classical training under Carnatic vocalist Nedunuri Krishnamurthy, which set his career's foundation. Mano also credited Tamil composer M.S. Viswanathan for early career guidance. "Working with him taught me to write notes and grasp different taalam styles," he said.
Mano vividly remembers his debut track "Then Mozhi" from Solla Thudikuthu Manasu. He fondly recalled how Ilaiyaraaja helped him master the tricky 'zha' sound,a collaboration marking a long partnership with the composer.
Throughout his career,Mano's musical experiences have been diverse, including singing with the late S.P. Balasubrahmanyam. He recalled a song for Jallikattu where both sang together, leading to a playful moment with Ilaiyaraaja, who teased about which singer sang which line.
Mano's versatility shines in his wide-ranging discography, including hits like Azhagiya Laila by Sirpy and Muqqabula by A.R. Rahman. He expressed gratitude for opportunities from various composers, acknowledging giants like Yesudas and Malaysia Vasudevan.
Besides singing, Mano has found success as a dubbing artist, voicing films with superstar Rajinikanth in Telugu. Now,he's focused on mentoring singers, with the Chennai program starting in September.
Mano's philosophy is all about practice and dedication. "I've seen life's ups and downs, and learned that constant practice and passion lead to success," he noted, concerned that young people often want quick wins, stressing strong voices need daily work.
