Heavy rains in the hilly regions of Thiruvananthapuram triggered a minor landslip at the popular tourist destination of Ponmudi on Saturday, August 1, 2026. The landslide, which occurred early in morning,resulted in debris cascading down from the 12th hairpin bend to the 9th, effectively halting all traffic to the area.
Fortunately, the incident did not lead to any major accidents,largely due to existing restrictions on vehicle movement uphill from Kallar . Emergency personnel from the Fire and Rescue Services in Vithura, alongside officials from the Forest Department, have been deployed to clear the debris. However,a complete travel ban to Ponmudi remains in effect as authorities assess the ongoing risk of further landslips .
In response to the adverse weather conditions,Chief Minister V.D. Satheeshan has been in contact with the Revenue Minister,Chief Secretary,and District Collectors to coordinate disaster prevention efforts. Reports of landslides and mudslides have emerged from various parts of state,prompting heightened vigilance among local residents.
As part of the precautionary measures,the Chief Minister announced that all four shutters of the Peppara Dam will be raised by 20 cm each at noon on Saturday, totaling an increase of 80 cm. This action is expected to elevate the water level in Aruvikkara Dam as well, which will see additional 20 cm rise in its shutters at 5 p.m. on the same day. The current opening of 200 cm will thus increase to 280 cm.
District Collector Anu Kumari urged residents living near the dams and along the riverbanks to remain alert . The Chief Minister emphasized the government's commitment to improving medical care for the injured and accelerating rehabilitation efforts for those affected by the rains.
In a social media post, Satheeshan assured that National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police, and other agencies are prepared to respond to any emergencies that may arise due to the continuing heavy rains. The government is prioritizing safety and rapid response to mitigate the impact of the weather on local communities.
