Tungabhadra Project,key for irrigation and drinking water in Andhra Pradesh,Karnataka,Telangana, is getting a major upgrade with 33 new spillway gates. This ₹51 crore restoration comes after severe flood damage in August 2024 when Gate No. 19 was washed away,sparking concerns over dam's safety and operational integrity.
On June 25,Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu will inaugurate the new gates. Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar,Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy,and Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil will join him. After floods,Andhra Pradesh government moved fast,sending senior engineer Kannayya Naidu to install a temporary stop-log gate to curb immediate water loss.
Post-incident, National Dam Safety Authority advised replacing all spillway gates. Andhra Pradesh,Karnataka teamed up to finish new gates in six months. Tungabhadra Project is lifeline, irrigating about 1.46 lakh hectares in Andhra Pradesh,with right canal water aiding agriculture in Kurnool, Kadapa,Anantapur districts .
