The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is under scrutiny for the deteriorating condition of service roads along the Edappally-Aroor NH 66 bypass, a crucial 17-kilometer stretch in Kerala. Motorists and pedestrians alike have expressed frustration over the ongoing construction of flyover-cum-underpasses,which has dragged on for over year,leading to significant traffic disruptions .
Particularly problematic is the area surrounding the Edappally overbridge,Edappally Junction,and Palarivattom, where service roads are riddled with potholes. D.G . Suresh, acting president of the Ernakulam District Residents Associations’ Apex Council (EDRAAC),highlighted the chaos caused by the unscientific diversion of vehicles and the inadequate signage around construction sites. He noted that the situation worsens during peak shopping times,such as when local malls announce sales, further exacerbating traffic congestion at the junction where NH 66 meets NH 544 .
“Motorists and pedestrians have been hard hit by the inordinate delay in completing flyovers,” Suresh stated,emphasizing urgent need for repairs. He called on the NHAI to address the potholes,elevate road shoulders to match the main carriageway, and expedite the construction of flyovers and underpasses. Additionally, he urged local authorities to prevent waterlogging and improve coordination between the NHAI and other agencies to facilitate smoother traffic flow .
A senior traffic police officer echoed these sentiments, stressing that immediate action is necessary to repair both service roads and the main carriageway, which has also developed large potholes. He pointed out that despite collecting tolls, the NHAI has not undertaken essential repair work,contributing to severe traffic snarls . officer noted that potholes are even present on the Palarivattom flyover, compounding the issue .
In response to the mounting criticism, NHAI officials stated that they are actively working on repairing the damaged service roads and addressing the potholes on the main carriageway. They attributed delays in the flyover construction to a recent design change,which will involve adding three spans to each flyover to accommodate a dedicated pedestrian underpass. This modification will extend the total length of the flyovers by 180 meters.
As the situation continues to unfold, the NHAI faces mounting pressure to resolve these issues promptly. With the Edappally-Aroor bypass being a vital corridor for both local and long-distance traffic, the agency's ability to manage these repairs effectively will be crucial in restoring order and safety for all road users.
