A new book exploring the rich cultural and historical tapestry of Srivilliputhur was unveiled in Chennai on Thursday. Titled Srivilliputhur - Divine Realm of Andal, the 168-page publication is part of The Hindu Group’s ‘Shrine Series’ and was launched by Nirmala Lakshman, Chairperson of The Hindu Group Publishing Private Limited. The event was attended by notable figures, including Suresh Nambath, Editor of The Hindu, and Navaneeth L.V., CEO of THG Publishing Private Limited.
Curated by Suganthy Krishnamachari, the book delves into the religious significance of Srivilliputhur, particularly its famed temples, such as the Andal temple and the Vatapatrasayee temple. It features a collection of photographs capturing the temples and their vibrant festivals, alongside illustrations by senior cartoonist Keshav that depict rituals inspired by the 8th-century poet-saint Andal’s Varanamayiram verses.
Andal, who was raised by Periyazhvar, is celebrated for her devotional Thiruppavai verses. The book recounts traditions associated with the temple town, including the ritual of offering garlands worn by Andal to the deity Vatapatrasayee Perumal, which earned her the title ‘Soodikodutha Nachiar’.
Beyond its religious narratives, the publication also highlights other significant aspects of Srivilliputhur. It documents the establishment of the Pennington Library in 1875 and the G.S. Hindu High School, where scientist K.S. Krishnan studied before collaborating with C.V. Raman on the discovery of the Raman Effect in 1928. Additionally, the book notes the geographical indication (GI) tag awarded to Srivilliputhur palkova in 2019.
Architectural features of the temples, including intricate Ramayana paintings, pillar sculptures, and wooden carvings found at the Gopala Vilasa mandapam, are also detailed. The contributions of Thirumalai Nayak to the temples and his palace, which is now preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India, are covered as well.
The book further explores Srivilliputhur’s longstanding connection to military service, noting that men from nearby villages have served in the Indian Army for over a century. Priced at ₹699, the book includes two posters of Andal and Rangamannar with Peria Perumal and is currently available with a special launch discount of 30% for a limited time.
