Philippines now world's top spender on solar energy,driven by sky-high electricity prices as Middle East conflict drags on. Since late February, top power distributor Meralco hiked rates 10 percent,forcing median households to spend around 12 percent of monthly income on electricity. That's based on average use of 200 kilowatt-hours,typical for a family of three.
As costs climb,more Filipinos turn to rooftop solar. From March to May,country imported $407 million in solar panels,up a staggering 145 percent from same time last year. Philippines now big player in global solar market,though China's overall exports dipped 13 percent in May after losing a tax rebate. Exports to Philippines,though,jumped nearly one-third.
Adrian Sabatera,39-year-old software engineer,finally went solar after years of mulling it over. He said falling solar tech costs and rising electricity prices made decision easy . He set up system costing 570,000 pesos (around $9,300) at his MPhilippines stands out in Southeast Asia for having no power subsidies,leading to region's highest residential electricity prices,second only to Singapore,where average purchasing power is nearly 13 times greater.
