June 21,2026,Prime Minister Narendra Modi led India in celebrating 12th International Day of Yoga from Kolkata's Red Road. Thousands joined event, focused on theme "Yoga for Healthy Ageing." Modi stressed yoga's role in boosting physical health, mental well-being,emotional resilience .
During his speech, Modi noted June 21,longest day of year, has become global yoga celebration. He said, “Yoga brings people together; I congratulate people of world on this occasion. Yoga is not just physical exercise,not limited to any age group; it is an expression of human spirit.”
The Prime Minister took part in Common Yoga Protocol session, practicing with attendees at iconic venue, flanked by Indian Army’s Eastern Command and sprawling Maidan. He stressed need to make yoga part of daily life, saying, “We should not restrict yoga to only particular occasions; it must be made part of our lives.”
Modi also discussed yoga's benefits for maintaining energy,vitality with age. “Our target is to be more energetic at 50 than we were at 30,” he noted,highlighting yoga's role in boosting both physical fitness and mental health.
Internationally, Yoga Day's observance has captured attention. Antonio Guterres,UN Secretary-General, sent greetings, acknowledging yoga's global impact. He said,“From its deep roots in ancient India,yoga has become truly universal,helping millions of people of all faiths & cultures find calm,build strength & live with purpose.”
In US,Delaware Governor Matthew Meyer issued proclamation recognizing day,urging residents to explore yoga for healthier lifestyle . He called yoga a 5,000-year-old practice enhancing overall health by integrating mind,body,spirit.
