On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi used the latest episode of Mann Ki Baat to celebrate achievements in Indian athletics and agriculture. He also urged citizens to stay alert during the ongoing heatwave. This was the 134th episode,aired on May 31, 2026. Modi's focus was on building national pride through sports and community action.
He particularly praised sprinters Gurindervir Singh and Animesh Kujur, who recently made waves at Federation Cup in Ranchi. Singh clocked an impressive 10.09 seconds in the 100-meter sprint,becoming the first Indian to break the 10.10-second mark . Modi called the athletes during show, commending their hard work and the camaraderie they maintain, even with their competitive spirits .
As summer hits India, Modi turned to mango farmers, stressing their importance in agriculture. He pointed out that Indian mangoes are making a name for themselves in global markets, boosting the agricultural economy . “Today,through Mann Ki Baat,I want to praise my farmer brothers and sisters involved in mango cultivation. You are not just ordinary farmers; you are playing a key role in strengthening the nation’s agricultural economy,” he said.
Modi reflected on a recent trip to the Netherlands,calling it a key moment for India’s global partnerships. He mentioned the return of rare Chola-era copper plates,which he described as invaluable treasures that provide insight into the Chola empire's maritime skills and governance.
With heatwave hitting central and northwest India, the Prime Minister stressed the need for vigilance. He called on local governments and citizens to join forces to lessen the heat's effects. Modi also highlighted the importance of environmental conservation, particularly the endangered Ganga river dolphin,urging everyone to take part in preserving biodiversity.
Grassroots efforts also got a nod. Modi recognized Saji Valasheril from Kerala, who has trained thousands,including specially-abled children, in swimming programs. He encouraged young people to nurture scientific curiosity,pointing out astronomy outreach by groups like Astro Kerala and the Bangalore Astronomical Society. “Astronomy has long fascinated Indians and can inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators,” he noted .
In a touching end, Modi shared the story of educator Girija Amma, who collected one rupee daily from students to support soldiers,raising nearly ₹40 lakh. He called this initiative a shining example of patriotism and collective responsibility, reinforcing idea of community involvement in nation-building.
