Kochi City police have flagged over 30 road safety hazards citywide,raising alarms about everything from lack of pedestrian crossings to dangerous conditions. This year,traffic (East) wing has sent these concerns to authorities,identifying 15 problems for the Public Works Department (PWD) and 14 for National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
Among critical issues flagged to PWD: flawed design of Chambakkara-Pettah road,blamed for several accidents. Police also alerted Kochi Metro about vehicles hitting metro pillars here,stressing urgent need for action.
Potholes menace continues across city. Found near Kunnara Park and Vyttila Mobility Hub exit on Vyttila-Pettah road . Edappally-Pookkattupady road near Kangarappady Masjid isn't much better. Pedestrians struggle at National Highway 66 Bypass in Edappally.
In talks with NHAI,police pointed to design flaws like median issues on Container Road and damaged roads to Madavana-Kumbalam bridges. Threatening potholes reported on Kalamassery railway overbridge. Speed breakers needed near Anavathil on Container Road,plus rumble strips,reflective studs on Chalikkavattom-Ponnurunni stretch of NH 66.
Most issues flagged between April and June. “Road safety can be ensured by timely,coordinated responses by multiple departments,” traffic police said. They've been monitoring,reporting nonstop.
Officials from PWD and NHAI acknowledged concerns,said they're addressing issues . PWD official noted ongoing road maintenance contracts,some potholes fixed. But delays happen…time needed to renew contracts,which last a year .
