Radhika Balakrishnan,distinguished Carnatic vocalist and educator,just snagged an honorary fellowship from Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (RBC) in UK . First Carnatic vocalist to get this nod from the esteemed institution.
Formal presentation happened at RBC ceremony,as per recent press release. Dr . Balakrishnan now part of elite club,including late John Mayer — composer and RBC professor from 1990 to 2004. Mayer,known for Indo-jazz fusion,got fellowship in 1999.
For over 15 years,Dr. Balakrishnan's been pivotal in promoting Carnatic music,blending it with contemporary elements. She's reached audiences in India, UK, and beyond. In 2023,she became first ICCR Chair in Indian Studies at Birmingham City University. Cementing her role in cultural exchange .
