Former India captain Rahul Dravid has popped up unexpectedly as a possible choice for England's Test coach. This comes after Brendon McCullum was sacked. ECB is eyeing Dravid among others to replace McCullum, whose time ended after a 2-1 home series loss to New Zealand.
McCullum's exit closes a four-year chapter where he led England in 49 Tests, grabbing 27 wins but suffering 20 losses. At home, his record was better — 18 wins in 28 matches. Overseas, the story was different: only nine wins out of 21 Tests, with defeats in India and Pakistan.
Dravid's candidacy arises from his deep game knowledge and precise coaching style. He recently led India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title and 2023 World Test Championship final. Yet,insiders say Dravid isn't keen on a full-time coaching return. But England role might offer him more home time while staying involved in the sport he loves.
The ECB's move to let McCullum go signals a strategic pivot as they gear up for Ashes. They said "the time is right to make a change," pointing to a need for fresh Test match direction.
Alongside Dravid, former England coach Andy Flower is a top candidate. Flower's past includes three Ashes wins and reaching the top of ICC Test rankings. Recently,he coached Royal Challengers Bengaluru to back-to-back IPL titles, boosting his résumé.
Another strong option is Richard Dawson, now Glamorgan's head coach. Dawson is respected for his tactical acumen and success in county cricket, making him a solid pick for the ECB.
The ECB is also looking at other big names like Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara,England Lions coach Andrew Flintoff, Pakistan's Mike Hesson, and former Australia coach Justin Langer. This wide net shows the ECB's push to find right leader for England's Test future.
